TLDR - Should I feel confident that iTunes will give me a free 4K upgrade when it is available in December if I buy the Middle Earth Extended Editions 6-Film Collection that they have on sale for $50 today. I would only be buying this set from iTunes to get the 4K upgrades in December. I already have all the movies on 1080p blu-ray but I don't own any digital copies. I know that Apple typically upgrades HD copies to 4K once that is available but given the price difference this seems to good to be true. My only hangup is that the iTunes collection on sale right now is HD because the 4K version doesn't come out until December. Considering that the 4K blu-ray box set of the LOTR trilogy is $90 and the Hobbit Trilogy is $95 buying digitally from iTunes would save me $135. You can get the extended editions of all 6 movies bundled together for $50. I have been looking forward to this for a while but when I opened up the iTunes Movie section today I saw that there was currently a Lord of the Rings sale happening. According to this article that changes on December 1st with both trilogies getting a 4K blu-ray release (with digital copies included). For those who don't know The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies have never been offered in 4K before.
